COFTON Hackett teenager Lauren Rowles has seen a brilliant year topped off in style after being named the Hereford and Worcester Sports Partnerships disabled sports personality of the year.

The gifted wheelchair racer received the accolade during a glittering evening at Worcester Warriors’ Sixways Ground.

Rowles was chosen ahead of rower Sussanah Barnett and wheelchair basketball star Ella Beaumont.

It has been a brilliant season for the former North Bromsgrove High School student.

She completed her GCSEs in June and started intense training to represent England at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, where she reached the finals of the 1,500-metre Para Sport Wheelchair final.

Rowles then went onto win a bronze medal at the International Wheelchair Amputee Sports Federation World Junior Games.

She has been inspirational after being affected by paralysing illness transverse myelitis, a rare disease of the central nervous system.

A member of University of Warwick wheelchair racing club, the youngster has not allowed her illness to stop her from succeeding in sport.

She won the U-17 Girls three-mile race at the Virgin London Mini Marathon in April and was presented with her trophy by diver Tom Daley.
