DROITWICH Spa Men had mixed fortunes during a weekend of double-header action.

They overcame Barlaston 3-1 at home last Saturday before losing 5-3 at home to Pershore the following day.

Against Barlaston, Spa played high-tempo hockey creating many chances. They opened the scoring when Alex brewer converted a square pass from Barry Williams.

Barlaston equalised soon after when the home defence failed to clear a long ball.

Droitwich regrouped, upped the tempo and used quick passing to win a series of penalty corners, during which a Barlaston defender was given a green card.

The same defender was sinbinned after a deliberate stick check just outside the area on Simon Baines. From this, a penalty corner was won after Alex Brewer drove into the circle. Adam James’ initial shot from the short corner was blocked, but Baines followed up with a neat finish to give Spa the half-time lead.

Droitwich put the game away in the second half when Simon Baines produced a cool finish to slot the ball through the legs of the ‘keeper.

A day later, Spa threw away a 3-0 lead as they tasted defeat against Pershore.

The visitors hit four unanswered second-half strikes to secure the win.

Droitwich opened the scoring from Alex Brewer before Simon Baines doubled the advantage.

Baines then made it 3-0 as Spa continued to dominate.

Pershore then pulled a goal back from a well worked short corner to give them hope going into the second half.

After the break, Spa were slow to start and were punished as Pershore hit four goals in a devastating 20-minute spell.

Meanwhile, Droitwich Men Seconds beat Old Wulfrunians 1-0 away from home thanks to a Mitch Oakes strike.

However, Droitwich Men Thirds, who also took on Old Wulfrunians, lost 5-2 at home.

Droitwich Veterans suffered a 4-1 home defeat at the hands of Worcester Vets.

Droitwich Spa Ladies were given a walkover 3-0 win after their opponents, Stourport, were unable to field a team.

l Meanwhile, Bromsgrove Men recorded an impressive derby victory as they romped to a 6-1 victory over Redditch in the West Midlands Premier.

Alex Jenkins, Tom Jennings (2), Jakob Lampert, Mark Robinson all hit the back of the net.

Pete Dawson also bagged also bagged a consolation effort for Redditch.

Victory was only Bromsgrove’s second of the season but it lifted them above their North Worcestershire rivals up to fourth from bottom.

They go to Aldridge and Walsall in the league on Saturday.
