ED Pollock could not hide his pride at leading Barnt Green out as captain and inspiring them to a much-needed victory.

The inform batsman, who has been at the club since he was five years old, helped them end a four-game losing streak in the Birmingham League Premier when they defeated Brockhampton by 17 runs.

Pollock smashed an impressive 130 runs to mark his return to action in the league in style.

He said: "I have captained Barnt Green at junior levels but this was my first time as first team skipper it was a proud moment.

"Hopefully this is result the team can build on.

"We had made a good start to the season but we've had a few injury worries which have affected us.

"But we generally do well so I am hoping we can get back on track."

Pollock, who had been playing for university side Durham MCU, was named captain in the absence of the injured Andy Sutton and vice skipper Josh Poysden.

He won the toss and opted to bat first and after the loss of Sam Cheshire (17) early on, William Baker (36) and Pollock guided the hosts to 91-2.

Even when Baker was caught and bowled by Adam Hewlett, Pollock stayed at the crease until Green reached 253, when he was dismissed by Nicholas Powell.

Tom Brown added 55 runs as the hosts reached 280-9.

Brockhampton made a good start in reply as opening batsmen Danny Irvine (69) and Henry Langford (32) guided them to 75-1, before the latter was caught and bowled by Burton.

But Irvine and Chris Boroughs continued to do well but once the former fell prey to Brown, Green's visitors started to lose wickets at regular intervals until Chris Powell and Adam Hewlett put on 53.

At 229-7, the game was evenly-balanced and despite 14 runs from Callum Stewart, they were bowled out for 263.

Brown ended with five wickets, while there were two each for Luke Radford and Tom Banton.

Green go to defending champions West Bromwich Dartmouth on Saturday (noon start).
