Bromsgrove Sporting 7, Heather St Johns 2.

BRACES for Reece Hewitt and Josh McKenzie helped Bromsgrove Sportingdemolish Heather St Johns at the Victoria Ground on Saturday, writes Max Banner.

The hosts flew out the blocks, with McKenzie’s diving header from Dale Edwards’ cross going wide in the first minute.

Six minutes later, Sporting were in front when debutant Liam Spink rifled home from just outside the penalty area.

Sporting could have had two more within the space of five minutes as McKenzie sent another header wide and Sam Wills had a free kick well saved by Ben Allsop.

The 30th minute saw them double their lead, a coollytaken penalty by Reece Hewitt after McKenzie was upended in the box.

Two minutes later, McKenzie got the goal his graft deserved when a pinpoint cross was met by an accurate header into the bottom corner.

It seemed as though Bromsgrove would enter the break with little to worry, but Heather striker Jonathan Jackson-Berarey managed to shrug off the defender and slot the ball into net.

Sporting had further cause for concern 0 minutes into the second half, as Heather halved the deficit.

A goalmouth scramble then resulted in centre back and captain Daniel Wain dispatching the ball home.

But Sporting regained their two-goal cushion in the 70th minute. Hewitt receiving the ball in the box, calmly taking it around ‘keeper Allsop and scoring into an empty net.

He could have completed the hat-trick ten minutes later after being fouled just inside the area, but his second spot kick lacked he power to beat Allsop, who held onto the ball well.

However, Sporting were not made to rue this miss for long as a brilliant last ten minutes saw the Rouslers net three more.

Luke Dugmore fired home into the bottom corner, Josh McKenzie claim his brace as his shot squirmed under the ‘keeper into the goal and substitutes John Pykett and Sean Brain teamed up effectively, with Pykett whipping in a delicious cross for Brain, who was left with the simplest of one-on-ones.

This was a routine win for Sporting, who maintained their unbeaten start in the Midlands Football League Division One as the away side’s defence were unable to cope with the flair of Hewitt, McKenzie, Spink et al.
