BROMSGROVE Sporting have signed 'keeper Chris Jay in a bid to cut out defensive errors.

The former Coleshill shot-stopper has joined after current club Tividale waived the seven days for an approach.

Jay is highly-rated by Rouslers boss Smith and he is set to replace Shaun Edwards between the sticks for Saturday’s Midlands Football League Division One clash at Atherstone (3pm start).

Bromsgrove will be keen to bounce back from Saturday’s 5-1 league loss at fellow title challengers Leicester Road.

The defeat was their first in the league this season.

Smith is also hoping to draft in another new face ahead of the clash in Warwickshire.

He said: “Chris has been a player I have wanted for some while. We wanted him in the summer but he was travelling for a month.

“But he’s back and fit and he’s a very good 'keeper.

“The defeat to Leicester Road was a surprise because apart from four individual errors that cost us we actually played okay.

“I know people think I might be a bit mad to say that, but we had lots of possession and created chances we didn’t take. We then made mistakes and were punished.

“It was down to a lack of concentration and one or two lads are feeling the pressure.

“But we want to do well, so it’s sink for swim but all we can do is bounce back against Atherstone.”

Sporting edged out Studley 1-0 last Tuesday, with Sean Brain on target in the Polymac League Cup.

They will now take on Highgate United in round two, date yet to be announced.

Highgate pipped Sporting to the title last term and are seventh in the Premier Division.
