BARNT Green had a fine weekend as they bagged their first win in the Birmingham League and ECB National Club Championships.

Green edged out Walmley by two wickets in the Premier Division last Saturday and followed that up 24 hours later with a seven-wicket win over Kenilworth Wardens.

That victory booked their place in the third round and set up a clash at Wolverhampton on Sunday, May 21.

Barnt Green had to show their steel to clinch a hard-fought league win.

Captain Andy Sutton had won the toss and put their opponents into bat.

Simon Jackson (5-44) and Tom Brown (3-25) were in the wickets as Walmley were dismissed for 150 in 37.4 overs.

Green made a fine start and had comfortably cruised to 100-4 when they lost four wickets quickly.

But they rallied with Jayme Crouch (12) and Brown (11 not out) guiding Green to 154-8.

Sutton said: “It was a bit nip and tuck to be honest.

“We had looked in control when we had a bit of a collapse and saw that there were rain clouds coming towards us.

“We wanted to make sure we didn’t suffer after last week’s game was rained off.

“We probably needed one or two of the senior players to take the game by the scruff of the neck.

“It was great to get our first league win but I would like us to win more comfortably.”

They built on that success against the Kenilworth Wardens in the knockout competition the following day.

Green won the toss and put the away side into bat first, before dismissing them for 160 in 39.2 overs.

Lee Tyrrell (4-26), Sutton (2-19) and Luke Radford (2-28) took the wickets.

Matthew Lamb then top scored with 78 runs as Green scored 163-3 inside 31 overs.

Green go to Berkswell in the league on Saturday (noon start) and on Sunday entertain Barnards Green in the T20 National Cup.

Sutton added: “It was a great weekend and there were a lot of positives for the team to build on.”
