ASHLEY Newfield starred with bat and ball but Bromsgrove slipped to a 30-run loss against Wellington in the Birmingham League Division One last Saturday.

Wellington won the toss and opted to bat first but were all out for 195 inside 50 overs.

Bromsgrove’s bowlers shared the wickets around but Newfield (4-27) mopped up the Shropshire side’s tail end after Alex Wilkinson (1-20), Graeme Whiles (1-26), Alexei Kervezee (1-44) and Yoesh Malhotra (2-50) had all contributed well.

The Boars were in a good position but failed to build on the bowling display when their time came to bat.

Opener Newfield was the only member of the batting order to shine with 70 runs off 98 balls, but only Kervezee (24), Lewis Cordes (19) and Malhotra (26) managed double figures as Bromsgrove were dismissed for 165.

Captain Mark Evenson said: “It was a disappointing result.

“We managed to get into a great position when we bowled out Wellington for 195.

“To be honest, we didn't bat well. We lost wickets too quickly and because of that we lacked a bit of continuity.

“Ashley Newfield played very well for his four wickets and also scored 70 runs.

“But in terms of batting we didn’t do enough to win the game.”

Bromsgrove go to local rivals Himley on Saturday, welcoming back experienced pair Evenson and Nick Husbands.

While Kervezee is set for Worcestershire duty in the County Championship at Leicestershire, but county academy batsman Ben Tegg is set to be available.
