OMBERSLEY ended their six-week wait for a win in the Birmingham League Premier as they defeated Walsall by five wickets.

In an entertaining clash at Main Road, the hosts were put into bat by the Black Country outfit.

Big scores by Mike Hingley (67), Tim Maxfield and David Powles (65) saw Ombersley’s opponents make 271-7.

But the hosts made a very solid reply when Liam Gwynne and Jack Haynes put together a 100 run partnership.

Gwynne was dismissed for 50 by Powles and Maxfield, and Ombersley also lost Uday Kaul (13) and Frederick Wynn (11).

But Nicholas Hammond (48) steadied the ship before Oliver Uffindall (38) and Edward Bayliss (40) guided them to a comfortable 274-5.

Chairman Tim Oakley said: “It was great to see the team get the win.

“It was a fantastic game of cricket to be honest and both teams played their part.

“We thought 271 was a par score and once we got off to a very good start we could afford to lose one or two wickets.

“In the end we won the game comfortably and hopefully we can end the season strongly.”

Ombersley, whose winless run of five games has been down to a lack of consistency in selection, may have to make one change for Saturday’s clash at Shrewsbury (noon start).

Oakley said: “Shrewsbury are a well ran club with a very good pedigree.

“They have suffered a bit like us really in terms of selection but it should be a good game.”

l Meanwhile, the seconds lost by eight wickets to Walsall.

Ombersley were put into bat and restricted to 190 all out, despite runs for Dominic D’Oliveira (36), Simon Harwood (54) and Samuel Oakley (36).

Walsall made 192-2 as Daniel Betty (53) and Jordan Stynes (53) made half centuries to sink Ombersley.
