It was a case of ladies first at Bromsgrove Tennis Club this week as they made a tremendous start to the Winter League campaign.

Competition comprises of just two pairs instead of three for the summer matches, which helps some of the smaller clubs who have less strength in depth to call upon.

Bromsgrove Ladies A began with a 3-1 win over Manor Park from Malvern in Division One.

Imogen Sinclair and Jilly Witcomb continued their strong summer form by winning both their rubbers while Tina Manning and Sally Franks beat Manor Park's second pairing but lost to the firsts in a close battle.

The Ladies B side started the season in resounding fashion with an excellent 4-0 win over local rivals David Lloyd Bromsgrove.

The entire team of Katherine Smedley and Meg Jones, together with Hannah Weston and Kelly Kenward were in top form as they brushed David Lloyd aside.

The Ladies C side were 3-1 winners over Droitwich B in Division Four.

Ann Banner and Di Wilson won both their rubbers while Joan McGregor and Debbie Oliver pushed Droitwich's first pairing all the way.

The only glitch in the ladies' opening matches was the 4-0 defeat suffered by Bromsgrove G who lost to a strong Barnt Green B side in Division 10.

The men started with a baptism of fire as they faced summer champions Manor Park and lost 4-0.

Bromsgrove's newly promoted C team managed a 3-1 win over Cookley A in Division Five.

The first pair of John Casey and Tim Wright were taken to three sets before beating Cookley's top pair and then cruised to victory against the second pair.

Voitek Niedzwiedz and Tim Roland beat their opposite pair but then just lost out to Cookley's top pair following a tie break in the final set.
