FABULOUS Fairfield Villa produced their best display of the season to secure a 4-1 win over Smithswood and climbed to the dizzy heights of third place in Midland League Division Two.

Any prospects of a Villa victory looked remote when goalkeeper Chris Mole suffered a groin injury during pre-match preparations.

Assistant manager Lee Williams had to take over between the posts having never kept goal before.

Villa spokesman Paul Oakes revealed: "Fortunately we have a qualified goalkeeping coach within our ranks in Anthony Fisher, who is involved with Kidderminster Harriers Academy.

"He had half an hour with Lee before the game. As a result Lee acquitted himself really well.

"However we went a goal down after just four minutes to what I can only describe as a world class strike. No goalkeeper would have got to it."

Villa responded to the early setback with goals from Stuart Hall, Connor Collins, new signing Carl Martin and Dan Wilkes.

Paul Oakes added: "It was a fantastic performance considering we had a number of players missing. As a result we had numerous players appearing out of position in an effort to plug the gaps. We even managed to get Joe Brookes to play, despite the fact he got married the previous day."

Villa visit high flying Paget Rangers this Saturday in the President's Cup when they should have Ryan Molesworth, Ben Scott-Smith and Lewis Smith all back to boost the defence.
