BOTTOM of the table Bromsgrove finally broke their duck in National League 3 South West when they blitzed Salisbury 35-15 at Finstall Park.

The win has been a long time coming, but was always on the cards after running top of the table Cambourne so close the previous week.

Head coach Dan Protherough couldn't hide his delight but admitted: "I thought we played better the previous week against Cambourne.

"Everyone seemed a bit edgy but that was probably because there was an expectation that this was a game we could win.

"But after losing our first seven games, there's always the worry that a lack of confidence could surface.

"We started the game really well for the first 20 minutes, but then we had a bit of wobble and started giving away silly penalties.

"Salisbury were leading 10-5 until the stroke of half time when winger Charles Baffour bounced off a couple of players to score a great try and we went in at the break 12-10 in front.

"Although Salisbury regained the lead early in the second half with a penalty to go 15-12 in front, we went back to doing the basics properly and bossed the game from that point, put Salisbury under pressure, from which they made mistakes, although the game was still in the balance up to about 70 minutes.

"We were comfortable winners in the end and it's just great to get that monkey off our backs."

Bromsgrove No.8 Tom Hardwick secured the first of five tries with Baffour, fly half Jon Critchlow, outside centre Sam Bastock and right wing Ollie Bache all breaching Salsibury's try-line.

Critchlow had an inconsistent day with the boot but still managed to land two penalties and two conversions to complete the scoring.

Protherough added: "I was pleased with the result, but not necessarily the performance because there were plenty of things we could have done a great deal better. But I can't wait for the next game now."

Despite the win, Bromsgrove still remain bottom but only six points adrift of Salsibury.

They bid to improve that position this Saturday when they travel to mid-table side Newton Abbot.
