DROITWICH Spa continued their impressive run with a 4-1 win at rivals Evesham in Warwick Printing Midland Hockey League West Midlands One.

Captain Simon Baines said Droitwich played their best half of hockey of the season which hit Evesham hard.

“The game-plan worked from the start as we switched the ball quicker than our last outing against Old Wulfrunians,” said Baines.

“It made all the difference allowing Lee Wakelam and Matthew Lee (2) to get on the scoresheet.

The second half was a scrappy affair as neither side created many clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities.

Spa’s moment of quality arrived with Wakelam dispatching the ball home to give the away side a four-goal cushion.

Baines said: “I was pleased to get the win which gives the team momentum going into the next four games.

“I was pleased to see us score four goals in an away game but we have to get better at seeing these kind of games out with a clean sheet.”

Droitwich hosts Newtown this weekend and Baines think it’s a “winnable game” for his troops.

“Newtown have not got a point on the board so far but they are a dangerous side,” he said.

“They pushed Old Wulfrunians all the way in a 6-3 defeat last weekend.”

Meanwhile, Droitwich Spa men’s seconds crashed to a 4-0 home defeat against a well-drilled Old Wulfrunians seconds in West Midlands Two Second XI.

Wulfrunians are a strong side and Droitwich started the encounter too slowly.

The hosts soon found themselves 2-0 down from two short corners.

Man-of-the-match Martyn Davies kept the home side in the contest as he excelled in goal, tipping a shot over the bar and then smothering another.

Barry Williams was sent racing clear at the other end but drew an excellent kicked stop from the away side keeper.

Williams was a constant threat in attack for Spa as he harried and hustled, seeing another attempt tipped away by the visiting keeper.

Wulfrunians were more ruthless in the second half and Davies pulled off an excellent one-on-one glove save.

But two quick-fire goals from Wulfrunians put the tie beyond doubt.

Droitwich created opportunities through Ashley Davies, who shot narrowly wide, and Pete Best.

Spa lost Steve Farr to a finger injury but continued to create further chances without managing to find the net.
