LEWIS Smith smacked home a spectacular goal to fire Fairfield Villa towards a slender 1-0 win over local rivals Feckenham in Midland League Division Two.

Smith cut inside two defenders just prior to half time before slamming home a fierce shot beyond the reach of Feckenham goalkeeper Josh Goddard.

Feckenham had chances to take the lead themselves, especially when George Tolley twice went close while both Murphy and Garmson also missed out.

Villa could have put the game to bed in the second half but striker Connor Collins was twice denied, firstly by a fabulous piece of defending by Ryan Edwards and then goalkeeper Goddard to keep Feckenham in the hunt.

A late header from Feckenham's Jordan Adams just flew wide of the mark as Villa held on to take the points.

Villa spokesman Paul Oakes admitted: "Our goalkeeper Chris Mole kept us in the game early on as Feckenham had four really good opportunities to score, but didn't take them.

"It was a really tight game with little to choose between the sides. We tried to pass the ball around early on but the pitch at Entaco proved a big leveller."

The result means Villa have cemented third place in the table but they have no fixture this Saturday, which may prove a blessing in disguise as Saturday's match winner Lewis Smith injured his knee while playing Sunday football.

Oakes added: "The free weekend will give us a chance to regroup and give manager Wayne Davis an opportunity to access his squad."
