BROMSGROVE Sporting will take a step into the unknown next month when they travel to face Watford side Sun Sports in the FA Vase.

The tie is set to take place on January 7 when both sides will be bidding to book their place in the last 16 of this season's competition.

Sporting boss Paul Smith admitted he knew nothing about the South Midlands League side but would watch them ahead of their forthcoming tie.

Smith said: "I always like to do my homework ahead of games and this will be no different. Both myself and the all the players are really looking forward to the tie especially as this is the first time in Sporting's history the club have ever reached this stage of the competition."

Sporting booked their trip to Sun Sports with a 2-0 victory over fellow Midland League Division One side Nuneaton Griff.

Jason Cowley put Sporting ahead with a 24th minute penalty before Griff defender Ryan Aston turned a cross from new signing Luke Shorthouse into his own net.

Smith added: "We produced a very professional performance. I gave my players very specific instructions on how they could win the game and it panned out exactly that way."

Smith also praised the contribution made by Sporting's large band of travelling supporters. He said: "They were our 12th man. We must have taken over 100 to Nuneaton. They were very loud and vocal and got behind us when it mattered. In fact they were brilliant."

Sporting were set to take on West Midlands League side Malvern Town this week in the Worcestershire Senior Urn semi final where the winners will face either Highgate United or Stourport Swifts.

Smith intended to use the Malvern match to play Craig Jones, Will Tibbetts, Joe Haines, Nathan Walker, Tom Craine and Luke Shorthouse who have all been on the fringes of the starting side.

Sporting's boss said: "For the first time in seven weeks, I've got all 19 players available and I want them to present me with a few selection headaches.

"I want them to highlight the strength in depth within the squad, as whoever I play, there should be no weaknesses. If anything, the competition for places should only strengthen it."

Sporting then go back to Midland League Division One basics on Saturday with a tricky Trip to Bolehall Swifts.
