DROITWICH Spa Cricket Club’s first team will have a new man leading them out next summer.

Leg-spinner Jake Young takes over the captain’s duties from Martyn Davies who is stepping down from the role after five seasons in which he has seen Spa through a major period of transition.

Young, 24, who has also played for Evesham and Bromsgrove, will be hoping to build on Droitwich’s ninth-place finish in this year’s Worcestershire League Division One table.

“It’s great to have an opportunity to captain the club where I first started playing cricket 11 years ago and I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

“We are a relatively young squad that can only get stronger from our experiences of recent seasons and I’m confident we can improve on the field by introducing more structure and a game-plan into every match.”

Young added: “With four Saturday sides and a flourishing youth section, the club as a whole are thriving and it is my hope the firsts can set the standard by challenging much higher up the table next year than we did last season.”

Meanwhile, Karl Goddard has been re-elected second team skipper, while Scott Fenn takes charge of the thirds again 25 years after leading them to the West Midlands Third XI Championship title.
