THERE were celebrations in store for Bromsgrove Tennis Club's Ladies D team who triumphed in their final match of the Worcestershire Winter League by beating Droitwich C 3-1 to win Division 6E and secure promotion for the second season running.

But Bromsgrove were forced to dig deep to beat a determined Droitwich side in a match that went to 3-3 in rubbers.

Bromsgrove finished 2-0 up after the opening round of matches as Lisa Rushton and Lorraine Russell won their final set 6-4, while Connie Wedelich with Anne Simper were convincing 6-1 winners.

The second round of matches didn't prove so promising at one point as Droitwich won both of the opening sets.

Rushton and Russell responded by winning a tight second set on a tie break before powering home 6-3 in the third to make sure of a Bromsgrove victory.

Wedelich and Simper also took the second set but then went down 7-5 in the third.

Anne Simper said: "This was a tough division to win and the battle we had against one of the lower sides showed why. But we will be looking to make it a hat-trick of promotions next year."

Bromsgrove Men's B side consolidated third place in Division 3E following the slenderest of wins over Stourbridge.

Phil Boardman and Steve Jones together with Jeth Tomlinson and Matt Smith had convincing wins against Stourbridge's second pair but both lost to their first pairing.

With the match level on rubbers and sets, Bromsgrove scraped victory on games won 31-30.

Bromsgrove's Men's F side were beaten 3-1 by Stourport C and will finish mid-table in Division 11E.

There was bad news for Bromsgrove's Mixed B side who lost 3-1 to Belbroughton and now face relegation from Division 3.
