DROITWICH’S dream trip to Twickenham Stadium for Saturday’s RFU Senior Vase final will put the town firmly on the sporting map, insists director of rugby Adam Drew.

At least 10 coachloads of supporters will be cheering on the Worcestershire club in their maiden appearance at the home of English rugby (1pm).

It will be a fairytale occasion for Droitwich’s players and coaching staff as they line up against Surrey outfit Farnham for the national crown.

Farnham warmed up for the showpiece final with a visit from former England star Jonny Wilkinson, a Farnham legend and former player in their mini and junior section.

“It should be a great day for Droitwich and really put the town on the map,” said Drew.

“This has never been done before by a team from Droitwich and it’s a great achievement to get to the final.

“We have to savour the moment. It’s the dream of every rugby player at our level to play at Twickenham and it should be a fantastic day for the players, coaches and supporters. There is a huge buzz around the place.”

Droitwich have already won the Midlands Three West (South) title and the Midlands Senior Vase.

They booked their spot in the final after overcoming Lancashire visitors Tarleton 23-11 in front of around 1,000 people at The Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground.

Droitwich’s squad will be leaving Droitwich on Friday at noon and staying overnight at the Marriott Hotel which adjoins Twickenham Stadium.

They will be having a tour of the stadium on Friday afternoon to get used to the giant arena and its facilities.

Stalwarts Pete Knight and Phil Horton have previously stepped on to famous pitch in county representative matches, according to Drew.

He said: “I think there will be less nerves on Saturday compared to the semi-final.

"Had we lost the semi-final we would not be going to play at Twickenham this weekend.

“Getting there was a massive incentive because that was the dream.

"I don’t think there will be as much pressure in the final because we have done the hard work.”

Farnham sealed their place in the final after a hard-fought 32-21 home victory against Cornish contenders Saltash.

They clinched the London Three South West title by 10 points from Eastleigh after winning 21 and losing just one of their league fixtures.

Drew said: “Farnham have a lot of history and depth to their club.

“It’s very hard to judge opponents from different leagues but they have had an excellent season and will be a very good side.

“They have a big pack but if we play to strengths Farnham will have to play very well to beat us.”

Drew added: "We will be going out there to win and we will give it our best and see where that takes us.

“I know we can play for 80 minutes and perform strongly in the last half-an-hour of matches.

"We will see if we can run their pack around a bit but I imagine the first 20 minutes will be brutal.

"The players have been going really well and we have put an extra emphasis on fitness work because we will be playing on a wider pitch.

“We are really pleased with how things are shaping up.

“It’s a one-off game and it’s about how well the players perform on the day."
