BROMSGROVE bagged a thrilling 13 run success over Tamworth to continue their winning start to the season in Birmingham League Division One.

Jayden Levitt continued his excellent early season form with the bat by making 92 and together with Ashley Newfield, who added 39, shared an opening partnership of 127.

But the innings began to fall away from that point as Bromsgrove found themselves reduced to 188 for nine.

New recruits Jack Taylor and Gareth Williams produced some last wicket defiance as they took the total to 232.

Teenager Taylor, who has arrived at Bromsgrove this season from Worcester side Old Elizabethans plundered a half century before being run out.

Bromsgrove skipper Mark Evenson said: "Jack's contribution was priceless. Together with Gareth they put on 44 runs, which ultimately won us the game and deflated Tamworth at the same time."

Tamworth tried to give chase in reply with skipper Ben Maddox making 74.

But Evenson and Newfield effectively applied the brake, the pair conceding just 45 runs between them off 20 overs.

It left Tamworth short on 219 for nine at close.

Evenson admitted: "We pressed our own self-destruct button after the opening partnership had been broken and that is something that has to be worked upon as we lost seven wickets for around 30 to 40 runs.

"But the team spirit is excellent and something we can build upon."

Bromsgrove travel to Shifnal on Saturday when they can welcome back left arm Oxfordshire Minor Counties strike bowler Alex Wilkinson.

Off-spinner James Ganderton is also pressing for a promotion after picking up wickets with the Second XI.

Evenson said: "There's real competition for places at the moment but I don't want to make too many changes to a winning side."
