ATHLETES from Bromsgrove School competed in the ESAA Midlands Athletics Final at Tipton Sports Academy on June 20.

The junior boys’ track and field team won the Midland Final of the National Track and Field Cup. They therefore qualify for the National ESAA Final on Saturday, July 1 at Oxford.

The last Prep School boys’ team to achieve this was the Upper Sixth boys who won the under-18 NatWest Schools’ Cup Rugby at Twickenham last year.

There were numerous personal best performances and the Prep boys scored a total of 433 points, which ranks them eleventh in the country out of 500 entries.

There were also superb performances from the year seven and eight girls - Ellen Ashton in the shot put throwing 7.78m (equivalent to 19 points), with Ellen also running 13.8 secs in the 100m (21 points). Isabelle Jones threw 21.49m in the javelin, gaining 21 points.

Darcey Pearson jumped 4.45m in long jump, a personal best for her, obtaining 23 points. Lucy Trigg also achieved a personal best in the hurdles in a time of 13.7 secs, contributing 20 points to the team total. Tash Malam jumped very well in the long jump with a jump of 4.34m gaining 20 points. Tash also achieved 20 points in the 200m in a time of 29.4 secs. Overall, the Prep girls were ranked fifth coming in to the competition and pulled themselves up to fourth by the end of the day gaining 363 points. Only two points separated them from the second place position of 361.

The inter-girls performed well in the Midlands round despite having some injuries. The top individual performances of the day were; Beth Lloyd (shot put & 100m) who scored a massive 50 points, Hannah Sahota (high jump & 200m) who attained 42 points, Daisy-Mai Clements (long jump & 300m) and Tilly Giles (hurdles & triple jump) who both amassed 39 points. Overall the inter girls accumulated 382 points placing them 5th in the Midlands, missing out on third place by two points.

The inter-boys team performed well but narrowly missed out on a place at the National Finals as they finished second. The group can be proud of their performance, however, as they recorded five personal best performances with Jake Lowe, Jonathan Burke, Nick Jakobsen, Ethan Hart and Pearce Childs.
