YOUNG talents from Droitwich came to the fore in the American Golf Junior Championship’s regional qualification round.

Five made it through to the national final and will take on players from all over the United Kingdom and Ireland on Wednesday, August 16, at Gainsborough.

Leading the way in the closest contest were Brandon Sarfo from Gaudet Luce, Hadzor, and Oliver Day from Droitwich.

The pair both carded final rounds of one-over-par in the gross competition.

After countback both scored exactly the same on each hole and unusually were declared joint winners.

Not to be outdone in the Sarfo household younger brother Hayden played the round of his life in the Star of the Future under eights category.

Young golfers without an official handicap competed over nine holes. Hayden returned a score of 45 to secure his place at the final.

Droitwich junior Lili-Rose Hunt qualified in the girls’ handicap category.

She went head-to-head with Telford’s Xyra Van Der Merwe and finished on the same final score of 41 points.

Only after countback on the last nine holes Van Der Merwe won but Hunt will fight again in the final with the top two through.

Gaudet Luce junior Tom Baker made the final with a second-placed finish in the boys’ handicap competition after finishing even with Matthew Russell from The Vale, Bishampton, on 43 points.

The pair were again separated by countback with Russell just winning through with a better last six holes.

Meanwhile, Hunt will compete in the Abraham Trophy to find England’s most improved girl golfer at Blackmoor club, Hampshire, next week.

She is among 22 young players to qualify on the basis of handicap reduction and will play for the national title on Monday.

Gaudet Luce’s Kacey Haynes and Bromsgrove’s Lucy Buckley will also compete.
