BROMSGROVE enjoyed much the better of their battle with promotion rivals Himley in their bid to reach top flight Birmingham League cricket next season.

Jayden Levitt struck a superb run-a-ball 132 as Bromsgrove breezed to a huge total of 274 for five and then had Himley on the ropes in reply at 176 for eight by close.

Levitt shared an opening partnership of 143 with partner Ashley Newfield who netted a further 58 runs before Ryan Pedley plundered a belated 39 to bat Bromsgrove beyond reach.

Skipper Mark Evenson admitted he did consider an early declaration but was also anxious not to let Himley back into the game.

He feared Himley's overseas player Nipun Karunanayake could cause some damage but he was finally dismissed when caught by Evenson for 101 off the last ball of the game.

Former Worcestershire player Alexie Kervezee claimed three for 20 while Bromsgrove School's George Marshall grabbed figures of three for 52.

Evenson said: "We only get George towards the back end of the season but he compliments fellow strike bowler Gareth Williams really well.

"He's and up and coming quick bowler who is currently playing for Worcestershire under-17s and can only get better."

Bromsgrove climb to third place in Birmingham League Division One just 10 points adrift of second place Smethwick, who they have yet to play.

Evenson added: "It's looking promising as we revert back to the shorter version of the game where we have great strength in depth.

"The club has been in the wilderness for a number of years and it's great to be back in the promotion race.

"Several of our players appear to be coming into form at just the right time and that should make for an exciting finish to the season."

Bromsgrove entertain Wellington this Saturday at St Godwalds Park where they can welcome back Lewis Cordez to help boost the batting.
