Alvechurch 3, Redditch United 0

Redditch crashed out of their second cup competition in the space of four days as neighbours Alvechurch ran out convincing winners in this first round Birmingham Senior Cup tie.

Both sides made changes to the teams involved in Saturday’s FA Cup games and it was the home side’s ‘fringe’ players who rose to the challenge, dominating for much of the game.

Young midfielder Luke Yates was their star turn and his two goals in three first half minutes helped steer Church into the next round.

He opened the scoring on 34 minutes when Andy Parson launched a ball upfield which Nathan Waite flicked on for Yates who calmly lifted his shot over advancing Reds keeper Ethan Ross.

The teenager doubled his tally when he popped up at the far post to turn in a Javia Roberts cross that flew across the six-yard box.

Redditch saw plenty of the ball but rarely troubled the home goal with their best chance falling to defender Gui Mailancol who hit a shot just wide late in the half.

The visitors started the second period strongly and were unlucky not to pull a goal back when Arjun Jung hit the post three minutes into the half.

But once Church had made it 3-0 just after the hour mark, there was no way back for Reds, Waite finding the bottom left-hand corner of Ross’ goal following good work out wide from Yusifu Ceesay.

Waite was just off target with another effort soon after and Babucar Sauane stung the palms of the Redditch keeper with a vicious shot from 25 yards.

After being dumped from the FA Cup and Birmingham Senior Cup in quick succession, manager Darren Byfield will be hoping the Reds can return to form for the league visit of Biggleswade Town on Saturday.
