SPECTATORS who leave Bromsgrove games early do so at their own peril!

That's because it seems as though Bromsgrove are becoming masters of the dramatic finish.

This week's win over Wellington was no exception as Bromsgrove sealed victory off the penultimate ball of the game.

Relieved Bromsgrove skipper Mark Evenson admitted: "I don't think my heart can take much more at the moment. This is the third game in a row where we've sealed victory at the death."

Openers Ash Newfield with 33 and Jayden Levitt on 38 laid the platform for a large Bromsgrove total.

But it was Deon Patel, promoted from the seconds, who took charge of the innings as he went onto score a superb 95 in Bromsgrove's 239 all out

Wellington went for the runs in reply, spearheaded by Glamorgan Academy player Roman Walker who remained unbeaten with 94 not out.

But Wellington consistently lost wickets at the opposite end and Evenson added: "Wellington played without fear and kept going for their shots. We kept picking up wickets at the same time.

"Alex Wilkinson came back for a second spell and mopped up the tail, which I asked of him, to finish with three for 56 while Ash Newfield bowled well for his three for 52.

"We had a bit of a wobble when batting and lost five or six wickets just before drinks.

"Deon held things together from that point and it was only a shame that he didn't go onto make a century because his innings was worth 100."

Evenson had found his resources stretched with the absence of in-form Jack Taylor, Ryan Pedley and Alec Baker.

But the skipper was handed an unexpected boost when Warwickshire's Aaron Thomason phoned him on Friday to ask if he could play, even though he was injured.

Evenson said: "Although Aaron is suffering from a side-strain, he was eager to play even though he couldn't bowl or throw.

"But he was available to bat and field close to the wicket. He also helped me set the field.

"It was just great to have him and just to put his name down on the teamsheet gives everyone a boost.

"We've now taken 72 points from our last three games and I can't ask anymore than that.

Bromsgrove take on Barnards Green this Saturday and Evenson admits he'll have a few headaches at selection.
