ALVECHURCH boss Ian Long believes chance signing Mamoke Akauna could be the man to lead his attack this season.

Having lost several key players this summer to a higher level of football, Akauna - nicknamed Smokey - could help fill the void.

Long explained: "Mamoke contacted me. He's at university in Nottingham and spent last season with Carlton Town, although I detect a strong scouse accent.

"He played against us for Carlton and said he liked the way we play.

"Mamoke is raw, but he's powerful, quick and a genuine number nine.

"He's someone that we can work with to help improve his game."

Akauna turned down the chance to join Darren Byfield's Stratford Town in preference to the Church and made an immediate impact, netting for Church in their opening pre-season friendly which resulted with a 1-1 draw at Malvern Town after Josh Hunt had put the hosts ahead.

But there was a downside to this display as central defender Kyle Morrison picked up a knee injury, which means he will miss this Tuesday's Worcestershire Senior Cup clash with Kidderminster Harriers.

Church also took on another West Midlands League side when they crushed Wolves Casuals 6-2.

Casuals twice took the lead but goals from Kieron Cook, Callum Debar, Cam Fisher, Ryan Winwood, Danny O'Callaghan and Aaron Birch sealed an easy Church success.

Former Hereford player Birch is another new recruit at Lye Meadow.

Since leaving Hereford, Birch has featured for both Stourbridge and Sutton Coldfield Town.

Long confirmed: "Aaron looked very tidy on the ball and has helped create good competition for places in the middle of the park".

Church host Bromsgrove Sporting next Tuesday, July 24 in what will prove a full dress rehearsal for their FA Cup clash.

Long has promised a strong showing from his side and quipped: "We always beat Bromsgrove!
