ANDY Sutton insists Barnt Green won't be going down without a fight this season.

Instead skipper Sutton has issued a rallying call to his players after the Green slumped to bottom spot in the Birmingham League Premier Division this week following a defeat to Moseley courtesy of the Duckworth Lewis System.

Sutton insisted: "We've got to believe that we can get out of this position. I cannot fault the players' desire to do well, but the results have not been coming.

The Green had removed Moseley for 218 all out after Sutton, who took three for 37 and Ryan Sidebottom, kept a tight rein on the innings early on before Worcester Academy prospect Zain Ul Hassan picked up five for 32 with his spin bowling.

Moseley were grateful to Warwickshire all-rounder Alex Thomson who supplied a vital 66 runs.

But Thomson then came back to haunt the Green with the ball by taking three for eight from his six over spell.

By that stage the Green had been restricted to 114 for seven when rain stopped play in the 26th over, having been 69 for one at one stage.

Sutton admitted: "If we hadn't had lost so many wickets, we would have won the game but we're just not having any luck at the moment.

"If I'd have won the toss, I would have certainly batted first as the pitch looked worn.

"Chasing 219, we really gave ourselves a chance, because I thought we'd bowled and fielded really well.

"We just lost too many wickets at the wrong time. Had we been four down, we would have won, but we didn't bat well".

Sutton was quick to spring to the defence of his county players afterwards who have struggled to impress this season.

Despite the presence of Warwickshire's Matt Lamb, Ed Pollock and Ryan Sidebottom in their ranks, the Green were unable to get the better of Moseley.

He claimed: "They are the type of guys, who if they click, can win you games of cricket.

"But it just underlines the quality of the Birmingham League this season that players of their quality can't just turn up and expect to score 50.

"They are potential match winners and I'd rather have them in my side than not.

"I'm certainly backing them to help get us out of the mess we find ourselves in.

"We've got six games remaining and the likelihood is that we will need to win a minimum of three games, if not four. They're all must-win games, but nobody is giving up here".
