Barnes back to best

CYCLING: Bromsgrove's Dave Barnes was back to his best for Wyre Forest CRC when he produced a superb performance to finish second place in the Echelon Cycles 25-mile time trial at Salford Priors.

Barnes scorched around the course to record a time of 52 minutes 25 seconds, only 16 seconds behind winner Stephen Price of Worcester St Johns CC.

Warren King rode a solid race and was rewarded with a superb time of 56.50, followed by Carl Heitman (58.12), Ron Clews (58.26) and Ian Connolly, who rode to a new personal best time of 59.27.Karl Davies rode well to finish in 1.0.32 followed by Phil Hunt (1.4.10), while Louise Rotheram finished her first ever 25-mile event with 1.14.58.

Michelle King was unfortunate to puncture and failed to finish.

Wyre Forest CRC also had a string of good performances in the Echelon Cycles 10-mile time trial on Evesham bypass.

Riders were greeted with a warm and sunny day and some fast times.

Barnes was fastest again with his time of 20.57, followed by Heitman with 22.35, and Connolly who recorded another personal best time of 23.24.

Davies recorded 23-58, followed by Hunt with a 25.06 personal best, Sue Middup-Jones (27.02), Mick Gray (27.06) and James Plant (31.30).

On the same day, Davies rode the Gloucester City CC 10-mile time trial and was rewarded with a new personal best time of 23.03.

Belbroughton's Andy Convery took a fine victory in the latest round of the club events competition at Warndon last Tuesday evening.

Convery covered the undulating 10-mile course in a time of 23.35, followed by Connolly in second with 24.50 and Brian Clarke in third with 26.59.

Other times were Hunt (27.07), John Smith (27.32), Mick Gray (30.01), Louise Rotherham (30.02), Ian Wall (30.17), Alex Hamer (31.09), Norbert Wysocki (31.37), and Plant (32.10).

This Saturday will see the country's best riders battle it out against the clock when Wyre Forest CRC promote round five of the Rudy Project National Time trial series.

The event will also incorporate the National Disability and Handcycling Time Trial Championships.

Former National Champion Stuart Dangerfield makes his return to racing after two years of racing in Australia.

Dangerfield (Wolverhampton Wheelers) will be testing himself against Kevin Dawson (sportscover.com) and Richard Prebble (GS Strada) amongst others in a quality field of riders.

Bromsgrove's King, who currently leads the overall women's standings after a superb season so far, will be looking to consolidate her lead with a good performance, while her husband, Warren also leads the veterans standings.

The course passes through Martley, Lower Broadheath, Hallow and Little Witley with the first rider off at 2pm.
