Roach lays down a marker in national event

BEN Roach was in impressive cyclo-cross form in the fourth round of National Trophy at Mallory Park on Sunday.

The under-23 sensation made a terrific start and led a strong senior field on the first lap.

Roach, a Wyre Forest CRC Development Squad rider, rode a faultless race to win his age section and come 12th overall.

Success in Leicestershire means he now leads the under-23 rankings and is in 10th spot overall.

Clubmates Paul Prince, Tom Payton and Mark Leyland made good ground in the large bunch of riders behind.

While Leyland was stalled by mechanical problems and Payton needed a replacement bike, Prince finished in 30th place.

In the veterans event, Ian Wright built a gap ahead of his main rival, Roy Hunt, and by the end of the first lap had built a sizeable lead.

Joe Rowe made another good start but a series of crashes in the slippery conditions meant he lost a couple of places but forged on towards the finish.

Wright had to settle for second place after he crashed, while Rowe crossed the line in a respectable seventh place.

Mike Cooper put in a rare appearance in the national event and finished well in the tough conditions.

Development squad rider Josh Papworth produced a fine performance in the junior race.

After a strong start, Papworth had powered into first place but his efforts at the Revolution Track meeting in Manchester started to affect him and he slipped to second.

Jasmine Adams made the long trip to Bryn Bach Park in South Wales for round six of the Welsh Cyclo-Cross League.

She was rewarded with a fine victory in tough conditions, lapping the second placed rider for an easy win in fine style.

Elliott Dinsdale produced his best result of the season so far with seventh place overall in round nine of the Notts and Derby Cyclo-Cross league at Darley Moor on Sunday.
