Vote for your sports personality of the year

ANOTHER year of fantastic sporting achievements is drawing to a close and it is time for our readers to cast their online votes to crown the Bromsgrove and Droitwich Advertiser’s Sports Personality of the Year 2009.

Over the last few weeks, we invited your nominations to help us select our final shortlist of five local sports personalities.

The deadline for nominations has now closed and after much deliberation, our five candidates have been chosen.

Ryland Netball club coach Sheila Perks won many accolades this year, not least the MBE for her services to the sport.

The 79-year-old also won the BBC Midlands Today Unsung Hero award and narrowly missed out on the national title.

Athlete Helen Russell finished third in the World Duathlon championships in the USA and has been selected to represent Great Britain at the 2010 European Triathlon Championships.

Bromsgrove Rovers president and former chairman Charlie Poole has been honoured by the Southern League and the Worcestershire County FA for his services to the club and the sport.

Bromsgrove RFC coach Ross Baxter has taken the Boars to their highest ever league position in National Three (Midlands).

And finally, last year’s winner Jessica Varnish has enjoyed another outstanding year of cycling around the world and will represent Great Britain in the World Championships next year.

Voting for this year’s award opens on our website this week at www.bromsgroveadvertiser.co.uk and will run until midday on Monday, January 11.

One vote per reader is allowed — multiple votes will be discounted.
