Candy claims a sweet double in opener

JUNIORS from Bromsgrove and Redditch AC made a good start in the opening round of the Heart of England Championships.

The team came second overall at the Abbey Stadium with the girls coming out on top and the boys third in the Second Division.

In the under-17s women, Izzy Billau ran the 300m in 41.7 seconds to take first place.

The 4x100m relay team of Billau, Romy Naven, Megan Greissel and Charlotte Tongue were second in 55.2.

First places were amiss for the under-17s men but they dominated the board in second and third spots across the disciplines.

The under-15s girls strongest event of the day was the 200m where Rebekah Miller won the A race in 27.2 and Ashleigh Bevan the B event in 28.9.

Candy Lockett claimed victory in the long jump with a leap of 4.54m as well as sealing the javelin with a throw of 19.09m, while Ashleigh Bevan took the B event with 13.35m.

Sidney McKenzie won the shot putt B with 6.64m, while Lockett, Miller, Fran Gallagher and Bevan won the 4x100m relay in 54.9.

Andrew Pearson, Cam Tate, Andrew Evans-Fisher and Danny Nicholls finished the relay in 53.1.

Molly Turner was runner-up in the under-13s 70m hurdles A race.

Olivia Worth finished third in the 200m A in 30.41, while in the javelin Amy Mijovic-Couldwell threw a massive 12.97m to win the A with team-mate Amy Tongue second in the B.

Josh Pearson won the 75m hurdles (14.7), the 100m (13.9) and the 200m B (29.2), while Jack Turner won the 200m A in 28.7.

Dominic Gardner won the 75m hurdles B in 17.5 and also clinched the shot putt A competition with a throw of 7.57m.

In the under-11s, Nicole Green won the long jump A with 3.35m and Beth Lloyd the B competition with 2.88m. Lloyd also took first in the 75m (11.4).

In the 600m, Kitty Luscombe was victorious and Lewis Byng won the 75m in 10.8.

Meanwhile, the club saw runners finish a credible 13th position at the annual Welsh Castles relay.

Andy Freeman secured a third place finish on stage five, completing the 9.6-mile course in a time of 57 minutes 58 seconds.

Mark Graham was sixth on the 10.6-mile 13th stage, setting a new record of 1.03.49.

Katy Anderson was the club’s only stage winner, finishing first lady on stage 15 to be awarded the coveted yellow jersey for her outstanding performance over the 12.8-mile distance, which she completed in 1.24.33.
