PLAYERS from Worcestershire clubs cleaned up quite a few of the prizes at the 91st Weston-super-Mare Men’s Open Bowls tournament.
Leading the way in the event, which ended on Saturday, was Droitwich’s Adie Burbridge, of Worcester Bowling Club, who retained his singles title, the seventh time he has won the championship.
The 62-year-old Worcestershire Middleton Cup skip beat Mike Cooper, of the Victoria club, Weston-super-Mare, 21-10 in the final.
Burbridge’s son Gareth also a member of the Worcester club, took the pairs title with Doug Lewis (Gloucester City).
They were 11-0 down after six ends against a pair from Bristol St Andrews but won the match on the last end when Burbridge, with his team two behind and a shot down, fired the shot wood into the ditch, giving them victory by one.
Worcester’s Brotherhood and Barbourne clubs had a successful week. Brotherhood’s John Cambridge and David Ellery, skipped by Barbourne’s Brian Evans, won the triples.
The clubs’ players also won several other prizes.
Terry Duggan, from Vines Park, Droitwich, playing in the event for the 22nd time, reached the pairs final, in which he and Audrey Harris, of host club Clarence Ladies, lost to GB Britton, Bristol.
Duggan also got to the singles semi-final, in which he lost by three to Burbridge, having been 19-5 down.
