Spartak still hovering above bottom three

9:06am Wednesday 5th March 2008

IT was a mixed week for Barnt Green Spartak, who advanced in the Smedley Crooke Memorial Charity Cup before suffering another Midland Combination Premier Division defeat.

The Lye Meadow-based outfit are on course to defend the trophy they won last season, after a brace from Django Farrell and another goal from Quentin Townsend fired them to a 3-0 second round win over Boldmere St Michael Reserves on Wednesday.

But Spartak's precarious league position continues to get worse after Saturday's 3-2 defeat against Coventry Copeswood.

They sit fourth from bottom, only two points above the drop zone.

And managed GJ Singh admitted things are getting difficult for his side.

He said: "After Wednesday night we wanted to push on.

"But Copeswood wanted it a bit more.

"We weren't a million miles a way but they wanted it a shade more than we did.

"It is tight down there and if you win a few games you are out of there.

"It is hard and it isn't going to get any easier.

"But I am not overly worried as I am confident in what we can do.

"We've got enough games to do something about it."

Spartak host Nuneton Griff on Saturday.

In Division One, Droitwich Spa picked up another useful point, drawing 2-2 at Stockingford AA.

Aaron Parr and Stuart James were both on target for Spa.

Tom Goss said the result was the least his side deserved.

He said: "It was one of our better performances.

"If we didn't get anything from the game it would have been a travesty.

"We learned from our first game with them which is important.

"We only let them have four or five chances all game.

"You don't get any medals for finishing 12 or 13th, but I knew when the team got back to full strength we would be ok."

Spa are preparing to welcome high-flying league rivals Oldbury Athletic this Saturday.

Fairfield Villa were convincing 4-0 winners over Alveston at Stourbridge Road.

Paul Oakes' men remain on course to finish in Division One's top six as they prepare to travel to 13th-placed Thimblemill REC on Saturday.

In Division Two of the Midland Combination Football League, Droitwich Spa Reserves suffered a setback, losing 2-0 at home to Cadbury Athletic Reserves.

Currently sitting in 10th place, Spa Reserves visit Dosthill Colts this weekend.
