MISSION: Matt Neal is targeting an improvement.

DROITWICH driver Matt Neal is hoping to build on an encouraging start for VX Racing this weekend.

The HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) star heads to Rockingham Motor Speedway, Northamptonshire, for the second meeting.

At Brands Hatch one week ago, VX Racing won two races to begin their defence of both the drivers' and manufacturers' titles.

advertisementNeal secured a third-place podium finish in Kent in his Vauxhall Vectra with team-mate Fabrizio Giovanardi claiming the two victories.

Qualifying at Rockingham starts at 3.25pm on Saturday with the first of three races at 11.20am on Sunday.

Neal said: "I wasn't too sure what to expect from the team and our own pace for Brands Hatch but the car was very good.

"It was great to be on the podium but I want to be fighting for wins.

"It's tough this year though and it seems the field has moved a lot closer.

"Fabrizio just seems to be able to bring this extra little bit out of the car at the moment and I would put my money on him for winning at Rockingham.

"For me, it's just a case of putting my head down and scoring as many points for the team as possible - this is my priority at the moment.""

But Giovanardi said: "I don't want to think about the championship just yet. At the moment, I just think about scoring points."

Meanwhile, Neal's former team, Pershore-based Team Halfords, also had a promising start at Brands Hatch.

Gordon Shedden and Tom Chilton will be hoping to secure some more points for the team this weekend.
