Lewis the hero in penalty drama

Rovers 2
Leamington 2
Rovers win 4-2 on penalties

KARL Lewis's penalty shoot-out heroics helped Rovers beat Midland Division high-flyers Leamington in a pulsating Errea Cup third round tie at the Victoria Ground.

The Brakes should have had the tie won by half-time but were left to rue missed chances.

Ben Mackey gave Leamington a first half lead and it took a fortunate last gasp equaliser from Michael Parsons to send the game into extra-time.

Ben Albutt then put the Greens in front before Ryan Parisi's last minute strike sent the tie to penalties.

Leamington's early pressure told in the 23rd minute, when a Les Hines backpass to Lewis took a wicked bobble and the ball bounced off the goalkeeper's shin straight to Mackey who slotted home to give the visitors the lead.

Both sides squandered a string of chances, but as the game drifted into time added on, Parsons picked the ball up in his own half and crossed into the Leamington area.

Goalkeeper Richard Morris came to collect but misjudged the flight and could only watch in horror as it bounced into the empty net for the equaliser to send the game into extra-time.

The game ebbed and flowed during the first half of extra time as both teams probed for a winner.

In the 107th minute Rovers broke the deadlock when Dave Bridgwater's perfectly flighted ball into the area was met by Albutt's powerful header giving Morris no chance.

That was not the end of the scoring as Parisi combined with Blake down the left before firing through a crowded penalty area past an unsighted Lewis to set up a penalty shoot-out.

Up stepped the hero of the hour, Lewis to produce two saves to deny Guy Sanders and Russell Dunkley from the spot.

After sucessful strikes from Matt Birley, Mark Benbow and Bridgwater, it was left to Jozsef Jakab to roll in the winning penalty, setting up a quarter-final tie against Banbury United .
