First goalless draw for Rovers

Rovers 0
Chippenham 0

ROVERS were held to their first goalless draw of the season last night.

Duane Darby was forced to make two changes from Saturday's 2-0 win at Hemel Hempstead, with Chris Duggan and Mark Benbow stepping in for injured duo Les Hines and Dave Bridgwater.

The Greens produced another accomplished defensive performance, with skipper Gary Knight in inspired form.

But it was a game of few clear cut chances.

Knight was forced to spare goalkeeper Karl Lewis' blushes after just two minutes, heading Luke Gullick's lob clear after the striker had capitalised on a weak clearance from Lewis.

Lewis produced fine saves from a couple of long range efforts from the visitors.

He held a firm 17th minute strike from Scott Lye, and six minutes later he tipped away an Aaron Cornwall shot.

Rovers had a shout for a penalty when Kevin Banner's cross struck Ross Adams on the arm, but thehome side's appeals were waved away.

A nightmare moment from Lewis almost gifted Chippenham the lead before half-time,with Chris Duggan's backpass rolling under the keeper's foot.

But Lewis raced back to clear off his own line.

Both sides were starved of chances in the second half, although Greens fans had their first chance to take a look at veteran centre-back DarylBurgess, who made his debut after replacing Andy Jones at half-time.

Chris Cornes went close for Rovers on the hour mark with a first-time volley which sailed just wide.

Chippenham thought they had stolen all three points two minutes from time but substitute Sam Allison's strike was ruled out for offside.

At the other end Leigh Downing could have snatched victory for Rovers, dragging a 25-yard effort wide of the post.
