Bromsgrove 25, Dudley Kingswinford 3

BROMSGROVE gained an important win over old rivals Dudley Kingswinford in the National Two North on Saturday.

In a muddy battle, the Finstall Park outfit ground down their newly-promoted oppoents in a powerful second half display.

Conditions were atrocious and did not appear conducive to running rugby but Town ignored that and a flowing attack saw new signing Jack Wardle touch down half way out.

Unfortunately, Bar Bartlett missed the conversion on a day which proved difficult for all kickers with only one successful attempt all day from DK stand off Gareth Brown, on the stroke of half-time.

This was the only other score of the half during which both sides had attempted to play some enterprising rugby, perhaps mistakenly, as handling errors were inevitable in the slippery conditions It was obvious after the interval that coaches Ross Baxter and Duncan Roke had instigated a plan that didn’t involve the ball going much further than replacement scrum half Dave Brazier and it was up to the forwards to keep driving at the opposition and retain possession.

This they did very effectively to a man and when DK did get some ball, Paul Norris, Dave Hughes and Chris MacGregor in particular put in some mighty tackles with the rest of the pack not far behind.

The visitors held out until 17th minutes into the second half when Hughes was driven over for the score.

If a reminder as to how effective nine man rugby can be in these conditions was needed, that try did it and for the next ten minutes, Town were ruthless.

Man of the match Chris MacGregor scored an extraordinary 10 minute hat-trick, all from driving mauls, which put the game beyond Bromsgrove’s Black Country opponents.

The Boars closed the game out without any drama leaving a convincing 25-3 scoreline to ensure an important bonus point.

Bromsgrove are now at bottom side Huddersfield in the league on Saturday, December 8 (3pm ko).
