KEITH Draper wants Bromsgrove Sporting to take another step towards silverware when they tackle Littleton in the Smedley Crooke Challenge Trophy on Saturday.

The Rouslers are keen on winning their first cup since the club’s inception in 2010.

They came close in the trophy last season, reaching the semi-finals before losing 3-2 and lost the Evesham Hospital Cup final to Littleton.

So far, Sporting have had the edge over Saturday’s cup rivals this season with wins in the Worcestershire Senior Urn and Midland Combination Premier.

But Draper is not taking Saturday’s visitors to the Victoria Ground (3pm ko) for granted.

He said: “We’ll be taking Littleton seriously, they will want to avenge losing twice to us this season.

“But we want to win a cup, our plan this season was always a top 10 finish in the league and win some silverware.”

To make matters more interesting, Sporting top the Premier Division and Littleton are one of a number of sides with games in hand just below and they will also meet later in the season in what could be a pivotal league clash.

The manager added: “The cup game will be an interesting prequel to our home league against them, so there is another reason why we want to win this match.”

Bromsgrove are still fighting on several different fronts, challenging for the title, Smedley Crooke and the Worcestershire Senior Urn.

They go into Saturday’s clash on the back of a 2-2 draw with third-placed Atherstone, where Sporting saw a 2-0 lead slip away.

But Draper was sanguine about his side being pegged back after they took 11 points from the last five matches.

“I was disappointed at first on Saturday but when you look at our results this month I have to be pleased,” said the manager.

“We’ve had some tough fixtures but came away with 11 points.

“We’re in a good position and although the teams below us have games in hand they have to play each other, so points will be dropped.”

Striker Chris Conway resumes training this week after a month out with a stress fracture to the foot.

Luke Dugmore also gave Sporting another boost as he has recovered from a broken leg.

Meanwhile, midfielder Chris Gleadow begins a three-match ban on Saturday, January 26, which means he will miss their home clash against title rivals Walsall Wood after his sending off in the 2-1 victory over Straford Town.
