Joy as Bears tame Wildcats

BROMSGROVE Bears bagged their first win in four games on Saturday in the Women’s National Division Two as they saw off Nottingham Wildcats 67-51 at Bournville College.
Jessica Cooper played an important role as she top-scored with 19 points, while Catrina Yang (13), Rebecca Taylor (11) and Lucy Allen (11) all made vital contributions.
The Bears were ready for the clash after some intenstive training sessions but after a close first quarter, they were trailing 15-13.
But there was no holding back Bromsgrove, who were led powerfully in defence by 16-year-old Amelia Parchment, while strong scoring from Yang and Cooper ensured they went into half-time 21-14 ahead.
By the third quarter the girls had well and truly tired the Wildcats out with Allen and Taylor rebounding the opposition into submisison.
As Nottingham tired, Bears powered to an important win.
The club’s under-15s National League boys team were edged out 63-55 by Birmingham Bulls.
From the off, the Bears boys led the game and looked like the stronger team.
After the first quarter the game was tied at 12-12 but they edged 18-13 ahead by half-time, only for the Bulls to hit back and take the game. Liam Healey (11) bagged the most points for the home side.
England player Taylor was top-scorer for Bromsgrove’s under-16s girls team as she grabbed an impressive 30 points in the 63-58 defeat to Solvent Suns.
Bears led for the majority of the game but as they failed to score for over three minutes in the final quarter, they were edged out.
In the final game of the weekend, the men’s team lost 66-57 by Loughborough Student Riders.
In an exciting clash, Adrian McLean bagged 20 points.
The local men’s side saw off Orillo BBC in the West Midlands League 91-55 as Ryan Dearn (28), Sam Ramsdale Owen (19) and Ashley Walton (16) filled their boots.
