Villa arrest woes with Police win
9:56am Thursday 15th August 2013 in Local
JOINT boss Paul Oakes admitted that a squad clear out helped Fairfield Villa get the Midland Combination Division One off to a winning start.
Adam Guest bagged a game’s only goal against West Midlands Police in a tightly contest match.
It’s a solid start to the 2013-14 campaign especially considering they had endured a disappointing pre-season beset by poor attitudes and lack of squad spirit.
But Oakes and joint boss Lee Shaw have let Andy Burgess and Paul Edwards go and also got the squad together to sort out some of the issues.
Oakes said: “We’ve never had a pre-season like it, there was a lot of moaning and general back biting so we had to do something about it.
“We’ve shipped out a few of the players and got the rest together to sort it out.
“It’s a good win to kick off the season, we only took a point against the Police last season.”
Villa, who went to Aston last night, entertain a tough Phoenix United side at home on Saturday (3pm ko).
