FORMER Bromsgrove and Barnt Green stalwart Roger Price is looking forward to tackling Australia after being selected for England to play in the over-70s Ashes.
The 71-year-old, who is affectionately known as ‘Podgy’ will keep wicket against Australia in the first test match, which starts tomorrow at Hursley Park Cricket Club in Winchester.
He was selected after his strong performances for Worcestershire’s over-70s team.
Price joined Bromsgrove as a teenager and played up until early 90s where he moved to neighbours Barnt Green before retiring from league cricket.
However, in 2000, Nick Husbands called him out of retirement aged 58 to keep wicket for the first team for the whole season.
He continued to play for the county, representing Worcestershire at over-50s and 60s levels.
Husbands said: “It’s incredible to see a man in is 70s with the same enthusiasm for the games that he had then he first joined the club.
“Podgy has always been around event when he was at Barnt Green he always popped in for a drink with his family.
“We wish him every success in on his Ashes debut, you never know with a good performance he could make the main winter tour this year under Alastair Cook.”
