Richards leaves it late as Rouslers make Vase progress

RICARDO Richards bagged an 89th minute winner to stun Lye and ensure Sporting progressed into the second qualifying round of the FA Vase, writes Pete Bateman.
The Rouslers had dominated throughout against a disappointing Lye team who offered little up front and gave keeper Jake Bedford as easy an afternoon as he will have all season.
Sporting withstood Lye’s early pressure and soon took control of the game creating and wasting several good chances.
Matt Poyner and Will Tibbetts both went close while Jacob Snape could have had a hat-trick, having a shot well saved and then hitting the post with a penalty given for handball after a Tibbetts shot was blocked.
Dominating and not scoring is always a cause for concern but Sporting continued to control the game after the interval.
The best chance fell to Richards who pounced on an interception from the referee and forced Lye’s keeper into action.
As the tempo of the game dropped on a warm day and a stalemate looked increasingly likely, the Rouslers made two substitutions to inject some urgency.
James Johnson, on for Snape, looked particularly lively and just one minute of normal time remained when he got free on the left and crossed for Richards to head the winner.
The 89th minute is never a bad time to take the lead and Sporting saw out the four minutes of added time comfortably.
This was a thoroughly deserved win with everyone playing their part, the managers too with timely and effective substitutions.
Sporting will now entertain Stafford Town at home in the second round on Saturday, September 21 (3pm ko).
