DROITWICH recorded their first win in seven West Midlands League Division Two games as they saw off fellow strugglers Barlaston 2-0 on Saturday.

During the first half both sides created chances, with Spa having an effort ruled out by the officials.

After the break, Droitwich’s first goal was created when Pete Prenderville fired a cross in from the left and Craig Timmis dispatched the ball into the bottom left hand corner past the wrong-footed away keeper.

Spa kept the momentum and added a second after a surging run from Adam James, beating several players, before drawing the keeper out and squaring the ball for Alexi Paynei to fire into an empty net.

They continued to press forward and had their second effort disallowed as a penalty corner had already been awarded despite Andy Griffiths’ efforts.

Spa travel to take on second-placed Newtown on Saturday.

Droitwich’s seconds travelled to league leaders Wednesbury and kept their promotion push alive with a 5-2 victory.

Spa had Matt Mason standing in as keeper and although maintaining a strong defensive line, they went behind from a penalty corner.

Droitwich struck back though with Marcus Clayton making the way for Captain Nick Bates to equalise.

Spa then took the lead with Lee Wakelam again proving his position in midfield to allow Bates to score the second.

The second half saw Spa extend the lead when Tommy Ross scored for the fourth game in a row.

Wednesbury responded with a goal of their own, but Droitwich restored their two-goal advantage when Marcus Clayton hit the target.

With Wednesbury trying toget something from the clash, Spa hit them on the break through to score the fifth with Callum Turner sealing the result for the visitors.

The men’s thirds drew 0-0 against Bromsgrove.

Meanwhile, the ladies side were edged out 1-0 by Harborne in the Worcestershire Divisio n Three.

This scrappy encounter was settled in the away team’s favour after they took a free hit quickly and scored with a low strike.

Spa struggled to create any clear cut opportunities despite a flurry of penalty corners in the second half, while Harborne had a second half effort ruled out for dangerous play in the circle. This left the full-time score 1-0 to Harborne.
