HEAD coach Ross Baxter wants Bromgrove to give the home fans something to smile about after Saturday's defeat to Sheffield Tigers left them facing the prospect of relegation from the National Two North.

The 28-10 defeat means the Finstall Park outfit would need to win their final six league games with a bonus point victories to stand a chance of escaping the bottom three.

Now they face Birmingham and Solihull on Saturday (3pm ko) hoping to build some momentum ahead of their impending return to National League Three Midlands and aim to bring some much-needed cheer to Finstall Park.

Baxter said: "I think it's fair to say it is extremely unlikely we will be able to stay up this season.

"We've not scored enough points and shipped too many at the other end and if you do that you will go down.

"I don't think we were that far away but it wasn't to be. We've thoroughly enjoyed our time at this level, we've learned a lot, played a lot of new teams.

"We've got to build on what we have learned at this level and treat our time at it as a massively positive experience.

"But we want to bring a smile to the fans by winning some games at home and try and build some momentum for next year."

Bromsgrove's impending relegation ends a brilliant period for the club, which won back-to-back promotions to play at the highest level of rugby in the club's history.

Bromsgrove have spent three seasons in the National Two North but have found the going tough this year.

Against fellow strugglers Sheffield, Bromsgrove paid the price for an error strewn display.

Jon Critchlow's penalty had fired them ahead but three tries and two kicks saw the home side streak into a 23-3 lead.

Solomon Dacres touched down and Critchlow converted but Tigers finished off with a fourth touch down.

Baxter added: "It was a game between two sides who look resigned to relegation.

"There was plenty of effort but we made an lot of errors and conceded something in the region of 20 penalties, which were far too many."
