JANE Williams sealed the title of the area’s leading lady rider after a thrilling battle at the Albrighton and Woodland Point-to-Point in Chaddesley Corbett on Bank Holiday Monday.

The battle for the top spot proved to be a real cliff hanger with just one point separating Williams and Annabel Dalton at the end of a long and arduous season.

In an effort to build up their points totals, both jockeys were in action in the Members Race.

Williams made sure of the title with second place on Pillbox, despite being pipped by Dalton to first.

Williams sent Pillbox to the front just before halfway and they had most of their rivals at full stretch down the back straight.

But Dalton was merely biding her time on the favourite Western Goose and they came through to join the leader, approaching the 17th before easing clear of their rivals just before the final obstacle.

Shifnal-based Dalton had the chance to reduce the deficit when she teamed up with Glidewell in the nine-year-old and upwards race but lost out to Tom Ellis on Rash Move and came third behind The Ferbane Man.

Rainbow Trout followed up last week’s success at Upper Sapey with a pillar to post victory in the Restricted following yet another enterprising ride by Mark Wall.

The mare’s victory last week was as a result of other runners falling by the wayside but this time she had to battle for success.

Rainbow Trout was in front from the drop of the flag and maintained a sensible gallop throughout but looked vulnerable when Master Tim and The Ketchup Kid moved up menacingly onto her heels at the top of the hill.

This prompted Mark Wall to kick again and the mare responded immediately and galloped all the way to the line, which cannot be said for her rivals.

Charlie Dando employed similar tactics on Lacunae as they raced to victory in the Mares Maiden.
