DROITWICH Spa Ladies returned to the top of the West Midlands Regional Women’s Football League Division One South following victory over local rivals Worcester United on Sunday.

From the outset of this local derby, Droitwich dominated the game and created several very good chances before April Polden opened the scoring with a close-range header, taking her total for the season to 18, following a lovely flowing move down the right flank and an excellent cross from Katie Armento.

The remainder of the first half saw Droitwich create a number of other chances, which they failed to convert, before conceding a goal themselves on the stroke of half time.

Sarah Parkinson-Mills was introduced as a substitute for the start of the second half and within two minutes had added a second for Droitwich, her 13th of the season.

Two further excellent goals were added by Beth Roberts, following some wonderful interplay from Polden and Parkinson-Mills, and Armento, who latched onto a superb through ball by Holly Newton, to give Droitwich an unassailable 4-1 lead.

Worcester did score a second goal just before the end of the game with an excellent strike from outside the box.

This was an excellent game of football, played at real pace and full of genuine quality.

Droitwich’s well-deserved victory took them above Rubery at the top of the division ahead of their final game before the Christmas break at home against Coventry Development on Sunday.
