CATSHILL judo fighter Clive Biggs has been named the Bromsgrove and Droitwich Advertiser’s Sports Personality of the Year.

The 57-year-old was the clear winner of the online ballot as he garnered 53 per cent of the votes.

In second-place came wheelchair racing star Lauren Rowles, who made her Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow last summer.

Dan Fox, who helped England’s hockey team to bronze in Scotland, was third, while cyclist Jessica Varnish was fourth and Droitwich Hockey Club’s Paul Woodward fifth.

His judo career looked over when he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament but after a successful operation by Marcus Green at BMI The Priory Hospital, he spent 12 months recovering.

He then proved he had recovered to win gold at the British Masters in Kidderminster.

Biggs said: “The tournament was held in Kidderminster exactly a year from my operation. I had won the same title in the two years before my injury and was delighted to win it again.

“It has been a tough year but I really have to thank everyone for getting me back into winning ways.”
