VICKI Law is hoping Great Britain Women's American Football team will floor the opposition at the European Championships in Spain.

The Bromsgrove resident, 23, has been selected as part of the squad after a series of strong displays for club side Birmingham Lions, who are based at University of Birmingham.

It's the first time the tournament has been held as the sport secures a foothold across the Atlantic Ocean Europe.

Britain will attend the Championships in August having only just expanded to the full version of the sport last year.

The national side are in group B against tournament favourites Germany, who they face in Granada on August 2, before tackling Sweden two days later.

Team GB will then play a final-position deciding game on August 8.

The women's team programme started in 2012 in a bid to develop players but continues to make significant impact on the growth in both numbers of players and the quality of play.

Their first game was a five-a-side clash against Sweden in 2013 but they played their first full game in 2014 with a 2014-16 victory over the Scandinavian side.

Team GB qualified for the tournament with an emphatic 54-6 win on Russia in May.

Law, who plays in defence as a middle linebacker, fell in love with the sport while studying at University of Portsmouth, before returning home and joining the Lions, who are also reigning national champions.

She said: "There will be more experienced sides such as Germany and Finland who we can learn at lot from and while this is going to be a tough test, we're all looking forward to the championships."

With the sport still new, players are required to contribute in order to fund their European dream and anyone interested in sponsoring Law can send an email to afia.vicki@hotmail.co.uk
