BROMSGROVE juniors Josie Ward and Patrick Niedzwiedz rook the latest Aegon Summer National Tour competition by storm.

Loughborough University hosted the latest tournament and the two Bromsgrove juniors travelled there to compete in the nine and under competitions.

Starting with round robin group competitions the best players qualified for the main draw and then battle it out in a knock out competition.

Playing in the girls competition was Ward.

She had a tough group and came second after losing a close three-set contest to the group winner, but that was enough to get into the main draw.

Ward recorded impressive victories in the quarter and semi finals to reach the final. A tense and close contest saw her just edged out in three absorbing sets 4-7, 7-4, 5-7 to finish runner-up.

In the boys competition Niedzwiedz, the current county champion, was in stirring form.

He won his group without losing a match and showed real determination to win some close three-set battles.

Moving on to the main draw he showed his fighting spirit and skill to come through some tight situations to reach the final.

The final didn’t start well as he lost the first set 5-7, but produced a great comeback to win the next two 8-6, 7-2.

Coach James Griffiths said: ‘I’m really proud of the skills and determination Josie and Patrick showed.

“They are great ambassadors for Bromsgrove Tennis Club and again show how strong our junior section is.”
