Bromsgrove 5, Scunthorpe 24

BROMSGROVE suffered a sixth defeat in a row as they signed off from their home fixtures in disappointing fashion in the National Midlands Division Three.

The hosts set the tone early on when James Upton had a chance to get points on the board but saw his penalty crash off the post.

Bromsgrove kept up the pressure, but a series of penalties were conceded to let the visitors off the hook.

Tom Hunt continued his try-scoring form when he touched down in the right-hand corner with just 10 minutes on the clock.

But Scunthorpe soon powered into a 12-0 lead when Guy Mychajluk claimed a score from a drive and Steve Johnson converted.

Scunthorpe went further ahead when Tom Foster found his centre Ash Dibdin on the inside and his powerful burst split the home defence and he went over without being touched.

Bromsgrove battled hard to get further points, and were denied a James Shewell try when the referee didn’t see his grounding of the ball.

Sam Bastock’s effort came close only for Scunthorpe to prevent him from crossing as the first half ended at 12-5 to Scunthorpe.

Bromsgrove had Tom Millen sin-binned for the second time in two weeks and Scunthorpe took advantage when James Dyson hoovered up the ball and dodged his way to the try line.

Despite trailing 17-5, Bromsgrove had most of the possession.

Upton was catching everything that was thrown to him and kicking well.

The hosts battered the visitors line but they defended really well, despite Dibdin’s yellow card.

As the game was coming to a close and Bromsgrove were caught on the break when Johnson started a flowing move and the speedy Rory Randall-Tyrell sprinted into the corner.

Johnson added the conversion points which sealed the Boars’ defeat.

Bromsgrove travel to relegated Sutton Coldfield on Saturday, hoping to finish the season with a final league win.

Then they have to wait until May 8 for the North Midlands Plate final, which will be their last match of the season.
