Sutton 20, Bromsgrove 59

BROMSGROVE signed off their league season with a comprehensive away win at lowly Sutton last Saturday.

Relegated Sutton RFC suffered another 50-point thrashing as Phil Horton and his men took apart their opponents.

The writing was on the wall as early on when Tom Hunt sprinted over from the left to score, but James Upton missed the difficult conversion.

Sutton hit back with a penalty but the away side extended their lead when Craig Mortelmans crashed his way upfield and offloaded to captain Horton who crashed over.

Upton converted as the Boars extended their lead to 12-3.

Both clubs had players sinbinned but it was Bromsgrove who continued to control the game and Sam Bastock exploited a gap in defence to score the team’s third try, while Upton kicked the extra two points.

Mortelmans was then rewarded for his industry with another good touchdown after an excellent passing movement found space to burst through.

The bonus-point try was in the bag before half time and once again Upton converted.

With both sides back up to full strength, Sutton pulled a try back when Oliver Chitnis scrambled over.

The score was soon increased to 33-10 when Hunt scored and Upton’s reliable boot continued to notch up points.

Dave Pearson then finished off a move started by Mortelmans before the Boars were reduced to 14 men when substitute Jake Hayden-Wright was sent off for punching Sutton’s Lewis Snowden.

Sutton rallied and Paulo Parisa wriggled over the line.

But tries for Horton, Horton and Belmonte sealed a comfortable win to sign off the season in style.

Bromsgrove end the season ninth in the league and with a North Midlands Plate final to play on Sunday, May 8.
