DROITWICH Spa manager Ian Fry hailed his players after another strong season in the West Midlands Regional Women’s League Division One South.

The team sealed fourth place with a 2-1 success of Wyre Forest Phoenix in their final league game last week.

Although a fourth-placed finish, while representing a pleasing season for the team, Fry put his team’s finishing position into perspective.

He said: “Finishing second last season, our first at this level, and winning the County Cup, was fantastic.

“This season was always going to be one of transition as we integrated a number of new players, but a failure to win a number of key matches, including two poor displays in cup semi-finals, cost us dear.

“I am extremely proud of my players and their complete commitment to our club.

"We have, at times, played some truly fantastic football and I know we will come back stronger next season.”

Droitwich went into this final match of the season having beaten Malvern Town 2-0 in their previous outing.

Spa dominated both possession and territory and carved out several early chances.

April Polden forced a good save form the Wyre Forest keeper and Aimee Ward hit the post, before Naomi Widdows scored her first goal of the season, controlling a Holly Newton cross before shooting into the far corner.

Droitwich were unable to extend their lead before the half-time break.

The second half stated in the same way as the first with Droitwich dominating the ball.

Polden and Sarah Parkinson-Mills were denied by the keeper and Lucy Boswell fired over from close range before Ward netted her first of the season.

Good approach play down the Droitwich right saw the ball find its way to Ward in the Wyre Forest box.

Excellent control enabled her to work the space for a shot which she drilled home.

Wyre Forest’s consolation goal did not detract from what had been a superb Spa display.

Fry added: “This was a really good performance by my team and an excellent way to finish our season.

“My players have been wonderful all season. They are a great group of players. I am really looking forward to next season.”
